We’ve had May 5th circled on the calendar since… well, last May 5th.
And while we love Cinco de Mayo as much as the next tequila, we love an authentic Cinco de Mayo even more. Many think of the holiday as Mexico’s Independence Day or a catchall celebration of Mexican culture, the truth has some real history behind it. May 5th actually commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which an outmanned and undersupplied Mexican army staved off French invaders from advancing toward Mexico City.
A relatively minor holiday throughout the Mexican States, Cinco De Mayo was popularized in the USA throughout the 1950s and 1960s as a window into the Mexican way of life, attempting to build bridges between Mexican, Americans and Mexican-Americans.
So, please, by all means: Enjoy the day. Perfect your gauc and pour up the margaritas. But take the opportunity to celebrate something more than just what’s in your glass or on your plate. Salud to our southern neighbors!
