I had a great trip down to Dallas, Texas last week. As a New Yorker, Texas has always been a little daunting, with vast open spaces, huge portion sizes, and a bunch of cowboy swagger. However, I really felt at home this trip, and wanted to share a few of the best watering holes I found in the big D.
My good friend and business partner Dennis Barnett (who also has his own brand of Mezcal called Xicaru), introduced me to Midnight Rambler and their bartender Zach. Housed in the basement of the Joule Hotel in downtown Dallas, this place feels exclusive and underground without trying. Zach offers true hospitality, walking us upstairs for dinner at the also cool Americano restaurant, all while making really good drinks. The playlist while I was there was also very, very good. My only complaint here is that they don’t currently carry Tanteo, but hopefully my impression on Zach was a good one!
Housed inside the One Arts Plaza Building in the Dallas arts district, this is Tex Mex at its finest. Tex Mex food can be very comforting, and they also have a good variety of seafood for someplace as land-locked as Dallas. General Manager Nacho is a great host as well. Started with a warm tortilla chips and salsa at the bar followed by a glass of Tanteo Jalapeño Margarita.
Great spot for a power dinner. While this high-end seafood chain is outside of downtown Dallas, General Manager Michael McClure provides service unlike any I have seen. High-end seafood you will find here, and while the price points reflect the quality of food and service, it is worth every penny. It is also a favorite of the management team at our distributor, RNDC. Come here on a Monday-Thursday and expect to find a number of people in the booze business enjoying dinner.
With 4 locations throughout Texas and Oklahoma, this fast casual taco concept with a full bar does it right and fast. They have huge portions, so come hungry, and make sure to grab a Jalapeño Margarita or two (as well as the fish tacos). At the East Dallas Location we were treated very well by Manager Cristhian Dorantes, but expect good service from everyone at this casual eatery.
Victor Tangos is an american cocktail joint with a little of a Tex-mex flair. The ambiance is fantastic, their mezcal portfolio is the best I have seen in Texas, and the service is great. Bartender Andrew took care of my group, and while I did not get to eat here - everything looked great. I hear they get busy on the weekends, so come early if you want a seat.
